I am thrilled to introduce you to my third victim, Kristi Campbell; the self-described,“semi-lapsed-career-woman,” behind the wonderful blog, Finding Ninee.
Wondering who or what Ninee is?
Ninee (pronounced nine-ee) is what her son calls airplanes. Originally started as a memoir, Kristi abandoned that idea when she read that a publisher would rather, “shave a cat” than read another memoir.
I had the good fortune of meeting Kristi a few months ago in a writers group. It didn’t take long for us to realize that we had a lot more in common than just being moms who write and blog. We also happen to have children whose special needs don’t fit any one diagnostic criteria.
Kristi feels, Finding Ninee’s, primary focus is to serve as a source of humor and support for moms who like her, find themselves in what she calls, Middle World; a place where autism exists, but a diagnosis does not.
Kristi, I always let the Dishwasher ask the first few questions. This week the possessed appliance would like to know If you could invent one appliance to do any household chore, what would it be and what would it do?
When it comes to cleaning and cooking (and occasionally showering), I’m fairly lazy. Therefore, my invention would be a magical appliance that can do pretty much anything and everything.
After it cleaned our floors, it would dust the tops of picture frames and then convert to a tool that would be able to remove dead bugs from light fixtures. Which, now that I type these words, sounds pretty much like a fancy vacuum cleaner. Though an appliance that would put the dishes away would be pretty cool too. How about a possessed dishwasher?!
(The crazed appliance declines to comment on this suggestion.)
What was the first major appliance you ever bought yourself?
The fact that I’m not actually sure probably says a bit about me. It must have been something cheap though, like a toaster or some other boring item that I was unable to pilfer from my parent’s house when I moved out.
Have you ever had a possessed appliance?
Every appliance I’ve ever had has been possessed. They hate me. I recently bought my sixth coffee maker in five years. I lifted my glass coffee pot off the base and the entire bottom fell off. While it’s possible that I may have accidentally banged it on the kitchen counter previously, rendering it weak, I prefer to think that it’s a conspiracy. The exact same thing has happened to me before. Twice.
Go ahead and groan but my son is the best gift ever. I didn’t have him until I was almost 41 years old, and was on bed rest for the second half of my pregnancy. The fact that he’s here, and so wonderfully perfect is the most unexpected and awe-inspiring gift that life has ever given me.
What does being possessed mean to you?
The bad kind of possessed is stupid psycho appliances that don’t have a right to have minds of their own but do anyway (I’m looking at you, coffee makers).
The good kind lifts our hearts in the most magical of ways. That type of possessed gives us light, love and wonder.
What possesses you right now?
My kid. My life. Wanting to create empathy and wonder for the masses who are sometimes ignorant, and who need so badly to realize that all of us are different and amazing. We are each unique and should be celebrated for our differences and quirks and for who we are rather than what people think we should be.
I recently started a blog series called Our Land, which is a place that I hope to inspire empathy and wonder for all sorts of situations. It includes special needs perspectives and so much more. I’m pretty possessed about making the world a more understanding and accepting place. One that will welcome my son. One that will welcome everybody.
I would like to thank Kristi for sharing what possesses her! Make sure you check out this great lady’s site, Finding Ninee and follow her on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest
